Khiva Station: What You Need to Know
Khiva has its own modern railway station and direct passenger trains now reach the city.
That is important because older Uzbekistan travel advice often tells visitors to take a train only as far as Urgench and complete the journey to Khiva by road. Urgench remains a useful railway destination, but it is not automatically the correct station for every traveler going to Khiva.
If your hotel is in Khiva and a direct train continues to Khiva on your travel date, booking Khiva can remove an unnecessary transfer.

Are There Direct Trains from Tashkent to Khiva?
Yes.
Current Uzbekistan Railways schedules include direct services to Khiva — the newer Jaloliddin Manguberdi high-speed day train and conventional overnight sleeper trains. Both continue through to Khiva railway station itself.
The two services currently use different Tashkent stations: Jaloliddin Manguberdi departs Tashkent Central, while conventional overnight sleepers commonly depart Tashkent South. Tashkent South and Tashkent Central are separate stations, so use the terminal shown on your actual ticket.

Direct eastbound services also operate from Khiva toward Tashkent South on current schedules.
Direct Trains Between Bukhara and Khiva
Bukhara and Khiva now have direct rail services, including faster seated products as well as conventional longer trains depending on the date.
A train ticket to Bukhara arrives at Bukhara Railway Station in Kogon rather than directly in Bukhara's old city — plan the same kind of local transfer there that you would plan on arrival in Khiva.
Why Do Older Guides Tell You to Use Urgench?
Before direct rail service reached Khiva, Urgench was the usual railway gateway for visitors continuing to Khiva by road. That historical advice still appears on travel websites and forums.
Urgench remains useful, but travelers should now compare direct Khiva trains first when Khiva itself is the destination.
When Urgench Is Still the Better Station
Urgench can still make more sense when:
- Your accommodation is in Urgench
- You need Urgench International Airport
- Your onward trip continues elsewhere in Khorezm
- A particular train stops or terminates there
- Its schedule works much better
- Pickup arrangements are already in Urgench

Some accommodation is inside Ichan Kala, some sits close to the walls, and some is farther away. Use the exact hotel address when arranging transport from the station rather than a generic “city center.”
